How does EMDR therapy work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress, such as PTSD, that are the result of disturbing life experiences, such as sexual assault.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy, you can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal.  EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

How does EMDR therapy work?

Consider undergoing EMDR therapy in Sydney if you’ve experienced a traumatic life event or distressing memories plague you. You need not constantly carry the weight of a troubled past or confrontation that destroyed your peace of mind. If you feel your sense of joy has been extinguished, we offer in-person and online help. Let us work through past events and current conditions with you, provide prototypes for the future, and alleviate your distress while resolving the issues.

  • Intense anguish may result from the emotional wounds caused by a painful history or traumatic incident. The World Health Organisation and American Psychiatric Association regard EMDR therapy for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as effective since it can remove emotional blocks and imbalances, enabling the brain’s information processing system to move towards mental health.
  • We successfully use EMDR treatment for sexual abuse cases, feelings of powerlessness, low self-esteem, and everyday problems.
  • EMDR helps you access and process disturbing situations during parts three to six of the eight-phase treatment plan. Internal associations concerning a memory targeted by the clinician arise while you hold aspects of it in mind and track the therapist’s moving hand with your eyes. The process facilitates dealing with the memory, your thoughts, and feelings so you can reach empowerment.

Controlled outcome studies prove that 84% to 90% of single-trauma victims overcome PTSD after merely three EMDR therapy sessions of 90-minutes. Further research discovered that all single-trauma and 77% of multiple-trauma sufferers were no longer identified as PTSD sufferers after six sessions of 50-minutes.

“Everyone needs an Anna McDonald in their life. She is smart, insightful, and knows how to unpack a lot of stuff, in a short amount of time. She actually makes you want to attend sessions, I cannot recommend more highly!”
